Chore reward ideas kids can work towards
Try time together, small choices and shared activities before buying more things.
By the Family Buddy Team
Chore rewards can be small choices or shared activities, such as choosing a family game, picking a park or enjoying an extra story together. Choose something the child values, agree the target in advance and keep the first reward reachable.
Start with a choice they value
A reward does not have to be another purchase. Ask your child which small choices or shared activities they would enjoy, then pick something your family can realistically offer.
- Choose the next family game.
- Pick a weekend park to visit.
- Choose the music while tidying together.
- Enjoy an extra story together.
Everyday affection, meals and essential care should never depend on earning a reward. Keep ordinary family care separate from this optional agreement.
Keep the first target reachable
Here is an illustrative Points example, not an app default: agree that a small task earns 2 Points and choosing a family game takes 6 Points. Three completions reach that target. Pick values that suit the effort and your family’s rhythm.
If a reward feels too far away, agree a smaller first target before continuing. Recognise the effort you have seen rather than changing the rules without a conversation.
Make room for siblings and adjustments
Fairness does not require identical tasks. Children can work towards their own choices with tasks matched to what they can do. Avoid turning the record into a leaderboard. Notice cooperation, such as helping clear a shared space.
If you use manual Points awards or deductions, agree the rules beforehand and explain any adjustment calmly. Keep the record understandable rather than using surprise deductions to settle a difficult moment.
Give your reward a place in the app
Create the reward your family chose and set its Points target. Record task completion, award Points and redeem the agreed reward when the balance is enough. Keep that Points agreement separate from any pocket-money record.
